Sutherland Avenue: Steel, Glass & Oak Staircase
Feature steel, glass and oak staircase leading up to a retractable glass roof and roof terrace in this duplex penthouse flat in North London.
We were approached to design and manufacture this straight flight of stairs with a difference.
It went up to a retractable glass roof to access a roof terrace in a duplex penthouse apartment.
The complicated brief was to manufacture a balustrade system that was part inside and part outside to allow the roof to open and close, which in effect cut off the top part of the balustrade to the stairs. The structure was powder coated mild steel, with lime washed oak treads, clear glass balustrade and a lovely mahogany handrail with a large radius curve at the bottom of the stairs to bring it gently down to earth.
- Materials – Mild steel powder coated stingers, limed oak stair treads, glass balustrade, mahogany shaped handrail.
